//Problem Space
Beside initially came to me as an idea when I saw whitepaper research findings that shed light on the acute loneliness experienced by seniors in care facilities. From a study by the University of Helsinki, nearly 40% of nursing home residents surveyed reported feeling lonely while 5% to 9% reported "feelings of intensive or painful loneliness." Having known people that have lived in assisted living facilities and who have felt similar sentiments, I felt a deep and personal connection to this seemingly overlooked topic.
//Final design solution
This app design is my response--to foster meaningful engagement by connecting verified volunteers with residents who want or need companionship. Prioritizing user needs and ease, the app's design is intuitive, ensuring that making a connection is just a few taps away for both volunteers and residents. The interface features large, clickable buttons, easy-to-read fonts, and a calming color palette to ensure it’s accessible to users of all ages and tech abilities.
Overall, the intent of this app design is to provide a single answer to what is--in my opinion--a problem in our society that deserves more attention. This solution seeks to mitigate the solitude highlighted in the whitepaper research and enhance the well-being of seniors through the warmth and kindness of volunteer companionship.
